Douglas Motorsport’s Gus Burton is aiming to carry the momentum from his best ever Ginetta Junior weekend into the seventh round of the championship at Thruxton.
Burton took three top five finishes in Snetterton, including his first podium finish since Donington Park.
“It’s been the best weekend so far,” he told Ginetta Junior Update. “I really struggled for pace recently, but we’ve been working on some stuff with the team and my driving and it’s really paid off.
“From Friday practice onwards, I’ve been there or there abouts, on the pace.”
Burton kicked off the weekend with P8 in qualifying, but a rapid start in race one put him in the battle with Casper Stevenson for second. The pair crossed the finish line side by side and Burton missed out on beating his best result in the championship by just 0.09s.
In the postponed Croft race, Burton enjoyed a battle with Roman Bilinski and finished fifth after staring 11th on the grid before another fight with the Alastair Rushford Motorsport driver in the third race of the weekend ended with a P4.
“There was definitely a lot of pressure on me from Bilinski,” he said. “It was mainly just a race of defending.
“The problem round Snetterton is on the back straight, even if you pull away a little, they catch you up in the slipstream again.
“Once [James] Hedley had gotten past me, I couldn’t really do much about Bilinski behind, but I did manage to pull away and then I was in my own bit of the track. I had loads of space until the end of the race.”
After a wing-mirror-to-wing-mirror battle in the final race of the weekend, Burton crossed the line sixth, but was handed a 7.8s penalty and dropped back to 11th.
Despite the disappointing end to the weekend, Burton still claimed his biggest points haul of the season and passed James Taylor in the championship standings.
“It’s the first weekend we had potentially race winning pace,” he said. “Hopefully we can carry this on for the rest of the season.”
