Hedley wins Knockhill race one as Martin retires

Championship leader James Hedley won the opening Ginetta Junior race at Knockhill after a mechanical problem brought an end to Will Martin’s race.

After briefly losing the lead  to Hedley at the opening corner, Martin reclaimed the lead before the end of the lap. For the next few laps, the Richardson Racing driver was untouchable, extending a gap over the rest of the field while Hedley battled with Zak O’Sullivan for second.

But a mechanical problem meant Hedley lost control of his car and he ran into the gravel at Clarks.

O’Sullivan kept Hedley under pressure, pulling alongside the championship leader multiple times before a lock up at the hairpin dropped him backwards. Casper Stevenson slipped through and immedietly took the fight to Hedley while O’Sullivan joined Gus Burton and James Taylor in the battle for third.

Hedley held off Stevenson and managed to pulla way to finish 1.480 s ahead of the rookie.

Burton crossed the line third, but dropped back down the order after a 10 second penalty for a jump start. O’Sullivan was promoted to the podium ahead of Taylor.

Ben Kasperczak took fifth after a close battle with Lorcan Hanafin and Joel Pearson, picking up his first rookie podium of the championship.

Ethan Brooks, Josh Rattican, and Burton completed the top 10.
