Zak O’Sullivan believes his move to R Racing was crucial for his championship challenge.
O’Sullivan moved to the new team at the start of the second half of the season, and claimed his first win in the championship in just his third race with the squad.
During the second half of the year, O’Sullivan claimed two more victories and was able to keep his title hopes alive until the final round of the season. He credits the switch from Douglas Motorsport to R Racing for his progress after the summer break.
“If you made a graph of how many points I gained in the second half of the season, compared to when I was with Douglas, it’s a huge gain,” he told Ginetta Junior Update.
“I closed the gap from 150 points down to 60, and James [Hedley] won the championship. So it was definitely a good move.”
O’Sullivan missed out on the title after Hedley claimed victory in the opening race at Brands Hatch. He ends the season with the rookie title and vice-champion status.
“I’m obviously happy for my first year, to finish second,” he said. “I’m a bit disappointed I didn’t get the championship, but it is what it is. James is in his third year now, so he was always going to be the favourite.”
