Breakwell Racing joins Ginetta Junior championship

Prototype champions Breakwell Racing will join the Ginetta Junior Championship with two scholarship finalists.

The Lancashire-based team aims to provide young drivres with a route to prototype and endurance racing with its links to UK and European prototype championships.

For its first year in the Ginetta paddock, the squad will run Aquil Alibhai and Fergus Chalmers, two of the eight drivers to make it through to the Ginetta Junior Scholarship finals at the end of last year.

“The transition for our team into the Ginetta paddock from our routes in Sports prototype racing has been a couple of years in the making,” said team manager James Breakell. “Our strategy is to give talented young drivers a route into prototype racing using our ties and relationships with endurance and ELMS team we have developed throughout our career in motorsport.

“Following our success in the Sports Prototype Cup in 2020, it was a logical step to join Ginetta as part of our continued growth as a UK based racing team. Being the new kids on the block in the Ginetta paddock we are focused on achieving a strong competitive year.

“We are proud to have two talented young drivers driving for us this year in Aqil and Fergus and we are confident that the talent they showed at the Scholarhsip event will shine through when they are racing within the championship. We remain ambitious for a competitive year in the championship and welcome the competition on track for the other more established teams.”

Alibhai will make his car racing championships with the team when the championship gets underway in May. He began his career racing karts in South Africa, before making the move to European and UK championships.

Chalmers comes to the Ginetta Junior series with a background in the rallying, with an aim to be the first Scottish driver to win the championship.
