McNeilly takes pole at Knockhill

by Bethonie Waring

Liam McNeilly snatches pole position in a drying qualifying session at Knockhill.

Rain had steopped before the start of the session, and a drying line had already begun to form, but the track improved considerably over the course of the session and times tumbled.

Aston Millar and Josh Miller spent most of the session swapping times at the top of the order, with Robert de Haan also briefly claiming provisional pole.

McNeilly, who was consistently at the sharp end of the field, put in a flying lap as the clock hit three minutes remaining. He managed a 1m02.553s lap to go 0.234s quicker than Millar in P2.

At the same time, Miller had hit the gravel trap. He could not get his R Racing run car going again and the session was red flagged to clear the vehicle.

Running would not resume and McNeilly ended the session top of the order.

Championship leader Seb Hopkins took P3 ahead of de Haan and Callum Voisin, who had briefly run top of the order before falling back as others found improvements.

Hopkin’s title rival Tom Edgar is absent from the meeting, while P4 in the chamionship Will Jenkins could only manage P15 in qualifying.

Miller would take sixth overall ahead of Josh Rowledge and Aquil Albhai.

Zak Meakin and Jamie Osbourne completed the top 10.
