Penalty promotes McNeilly to race win

Liam McNeilly is promoted to the race win after a time penalty for Tom Edgar and Joe Warhurst.

Edgar led from lights to flag in the final race of the 2021 Ginetta Junior Winter Series to take the win ahead of Warhurst and McNeilly. The race was interuptted by a lengthy safety car period and ended under red flag conditions.

But it was during that safety car that Edgar and Warhurst’s later efforts would be undone. Both were deemed to have overtaken during the safety car period. Though it wasn’t investigated during the race, a post-race investigation led to both drivers being handed 10 second time penalties.

The penalties dropped them back to 13th and 14th respectively, ahead of Luca Hopkinson, the only other classified finisher.

The incident promoted McNeilly to the top of the order. Despite the added points, it wasn’t enough to topple Josh Rowledge in the championship fight. With dropped scores taken into account, McNeilly ended the weekend just a single point behind Rowledge.

Aqil Alibhai was promoted to second while Sonny Smith took his first overall podium finish in P3.
