R Racing announces six-car line-up

R Racing will field an international line-up for the 2022 Ginetta Junior Championship.

The reigning teams’ champion will once again run a capacity six cars as it aims to defend the title in its third season in the series.

“2021 was great for the team, we couldn’t have wished for more so obviously our aim is to carry the momentum into 2022,” said team principal Jamie Ross. “We have a solid winter testing programme in lace to try and maximise our six drivers.

“Working with Phil Glew and Ash Sutton I am fairly confident we can have another strong season. We have some exciting new faces in the team and it will be great to see how they fair against our second year drivers.”

R Racing not only took the teams’ title last year, but ran Aston Millar to the drivers’ title, 45 points ahead of Fox Motorsport’s Liam McNeilly. The squad also won 16 of the 25 races, with Millar and fellow R Racing driver Callum Voisin sharing the record for most wins in the season.

Among the drivers racing with the team in 2022 will be Winter Series victor Josh Rowledge, who comes into the year as one of the favourites for the title.

For the past decade, the Winter Series winner has usually been a championship contender the following season, with two of the past three winter victors going on to take the overall crown the following year.

Rowledge, who finished seventh in the overall championship last year, will no doubt be aiming to continue that record.

Also continuing for a second season in the championship is Mexican racer Ian Aguilera, who was another front runner in the Winter Series and took a best finish of ninth in the main championship last year.

Joining the team for the 2022 season will be four rookies.

Sonny Smith and Luke Watts both made their debuts last season, with best finishes of 11th and 12th respectively. They then continued with the team into the Winter Series, where Smith took the rookie crown.

American driver Luca Hopkinson and Singapore’s Akshay Bohra also join the squad for their first car racing series this year.
