Slater holds of Schwarze for G Fest win

Freddie Slater converts pole position to the race win in the second Ginetta Junior race of the G Fest.

The championship leader was under pressure throughout the race, and was just 0.113s ahead of Hugo Schwarze as they crossed the line.

Slater initially lost the lead off the line, with second placed Leo Robinson sweeping past, but the pole sitter came back through moments later.

Alisha Palmowski and Mikey Porter slotted into second and third and joined Slater as he broke away from the rest of the field.

The trio ran nose to tail but didn’t engage in a battle as they worked on extending the gap.

Meanwhile behind them was a close fight for fourth, with Chase Fernandez close behind Schwarze. The Scholarship winner briefly moved into fourth and Hopkinson joined the battle. Schwarze then moved back into fourth and broke away from the fight to try to close the gap to the leaders.

In the final four minutes of the race, Schwarze reached the lead fight. The four bunched up as Schwarze worked his way into second and then alongside Slater. Palmowski briefly got past Schwarze and was running side by side with Slater before dropping back.

Slater held onto the lead, but Schwarze continued to keep the pressure on until the chequered flag.

Palmowski took third, just under a second behind Schwarze at the chequered flag, with Porter just missing out on the podium position.

Chase Fernandez managed to shake off Charlie Hart and Leo Robinson late on and was catching the leaders, but ran out of time before he could challenge at the front.

Hart picked up sixth, ahead of Robinson and Finn Harrison. Hopkinson, who had been in the fight for fifth for most of the race, dropped down the order after an off at Club. He came into the pits to retire.

McKenzie Douglass had a good drive from 13th on the grid to finish ninth, ahead of Reza Seewooruthun.
